Sad Song Sap

So.... let me start by saying I'm a relatively happy person, thinking good thoughts and opting for optimism!

BUT I'm a total sap for sad-ish songs. I can't get these three off repeat when they pop-up in my iTunes.

John Legend - Everyone Knows

Adele - Someone Like You

Brandi Carlile - That Year

Dirty Betty's Deliciously Decadant Doughnuts

Early this morning, when most people are fighting the snooze button (which I'm usually up to myself) one thing made me jump out of bed and jump on the smelly train to Lincoln Park: Dirty Betty's opens today.

Doughnuts are definitely the new pastry craze. Move over cupcakes and macarons, there's a new kid in town. Each morning a long  line forms around the block at the Doughnut Vault, Scott Harris of Mia Francesca announced his move to open a small shop called Glaze and Dirty Betty’s the latest to join the game.

But with flavors like ginger doughnuts with key lime glaze, and blueberry doughnuts with a lemon glaze, how can one possibly resist?

ps. I love alliterations.
pps. I'm pretty sure I need to double my workout after this morning's "meal".

Don't Drink and... Take Photos

My cousin uploaded photobooth pics from her wedding last month. While hilariously comical, I think I'll refrain from frequenting the open bar this upcoming wedding season.

Forever Young Friday

via Shannon H.

Forever Young Friday! Sitting here being nostalgic of our "group" from junior high. I can't say for myself, but my friends were a creative bunch!

Have a great weekend, readers!

I dream of Java

via NYTimes

Wanderlust is kicking in again. Maybe it's the Chicago thaw (yes, it's May and starting only TODAY has the weather been nice enough to go sans coat), but the thought of traveling somewhere hot and humid with different food-ventures seems extremely enticing right now. Indonesia seems especially enticing, with cuisines that incorporate coconut milks, peanut sauces and my FAVORITE ingredient... sambal ulek. I love that spicy red sauce!

Until then, small home projects will have to suffice. I'm moving to a new neighborhood at the end of this month, and will greatly miss being in Edgewater, just blocks from the beach and few still to the awesome restaurant scene of Andersonville. But the new place has bigger spaces and the part I look forward to most? Growing a garden in the yard! I already have jalapeno seeds in hand (to be used in guac made in my molcajete), and will most likely start growing basil. The mere thought of home-grown, homemade pesto is making my stomach growl!

Any suggestions for this first-time, urban farmer?
